Here’s a quick before and after of a guest bedroom project we recently finished. This was one of our quickest turnarounds yet. Working on a tight budget, we painted the room a calming off white, re-used and painted old oak side tables and added new lighting, sheets, pillows, custom art and full length curtains. These are just iphone shots, stay tuned for the pro shots soon!
Painting Grout in your kitchen, bathroom or entrance.
Ottawa Interior Design
We like a lot of people have the builder style white tiles in the kitchen and entrance with the brown grout. I’m not sure who thought this looked good, but anyway. After we painted the walls in the kitchen and family room white, the grout stood out even more and was frankly driving us a little crazy. So we decided we would change the floors…. then after going through the list of other things we want to do to our home (which grows everyday). We decided to go to plan B and paint the grout!
We bought the grout paint/refresher from Home Depot I believe (about two months ago) and finally just got around to doing it. I think I knew in the back of my mind it would be a pain in the butt… it did not disappoint. First I tested a spot under the fridge just in case it looked terrible. Once I had done that small section I was under the illusion that it was going to be quick an painless, but that was obviously not the case.
The instructions on the bottle:
- Clean the surface
- Shake well before using
- Spread evenly using a toothbrush or grout applicator (I started with a toothbrush and then went to using a small art paintbrush)
- Wait 30 to 60 minutes, mist with water and let stand
- After 5 minutes scrub tile to remove excess colourant (this was a the pain in the but part, you had to scrub it off, but careful enough not to scrub the actual grout, then go around and wash down the all the tile again with soap and water to remove the residue.)
- Protect from traffic for 2 hours and from water for 24 hrs
When I went to do the entrance I used the art brush again but was more careful to not get the colourant on the tile, and when I did I wiped it up quickly with a wet paper towel. They both took about the same length in time (forever) or 4-6hrs, but it would depend on the size of your floor. You feel like Cinderella no matter which way you do it.
It was encouraging as I went along to see the progress though, so that kept me motivated. I painted in the evening (as you can see) and woke up and scrubbed the floors in the morning. Use a towel or knee pads for your knees because you will be on them for a while, I also changed positions throughout. I had a movie that I had already seen (because you can’t really look up) on in the background, which helped to pass the time. You can also play music.
Ta da. Although it was pain staking and my neck was sore afterwards from staring down for so long, it was well worth it. I wish I had done it earlier, because now we comment on it every time we walk in the kitchen.
Hope this is helpful for anyone looking to do the same thing!

Personalize Your Home.
Does your home reflect who you are and your taste? It Should.
You don’t have to have expensive style, a well put together space can look like a million bucks to you, if it’s done properly. Nate Berkus thinks the key to design is personalization and we would have to agree with him. A room designed with the inspiration of a certain style, mood and colour, with hits of personal touches will make the all the difference to the space. If you have neat pieces you have collected over the years, you may just need to shine them in a new light to really be able to appreciate them, or buy new interesting pieces that say something about who you are.
Another key is to never buy sets of anything, especially large bulky dark furniture it may overwhelm the space. If you mix and match pieces that coordinate with the theme of the room, but aren’t matchy matchy it makes the space so much more interesting and unique. You want people to walk in and feel comfortable yet wowed by how great the space looks and how much it reflects you as individuals.
Don’t always shop at the same stores. If your buying everything from one store, your home will look like it’s straight out of the showroom. While in theory that isn’t such a bad thing, it doesn’t give the space a homey personal feel. It also doesn’t really act as a conversation starter if everyone knows where all your furniture is from. You want people to be curious and ask questions. “Oh where did you find this?!”
Check out locally owned stores, antique and vintage shops, as well as new stores you wouldn’t normally go to. You can even get your DIY on if you check out thrift stores and Kijiji for items that may need a little TLC, but have great potential!! Expand your horizons and open you mind to new possibilities. There are so many options now a days for all budgets. If you are a savvy shopper there are lots of deals to be had, and great pieces to find.
You can mix old and new and you can definitely mix pricey items with inexpensive pieces. Mixing textures and colours is also key. Use white and dark pieces to contrast each other, as well add wood for warmth, and silver or gold pieces for cool contrast. Find inspiration through pictures and plan out your space. Then be on the lookout for certain pieces and in no time your space will come together !!
Obviously if you have no vision at all, we would be more than happy to help out. We can do an initial consultation to get you started and be on you way, or we can take on the project!

Our new clients asked us to help them out with their master bedroom. They liked their bed (so did we) but wanted to start fresh with everything else. The owners weren’t loving the dark green they originally painted the room, we agreed and revamped it with a fresh off-white. Next we added a beautiful silver tree wallpaper to give the room that cozy nature feel we love so much. Some of the challenges with this master came with dealing the small size of the room and fitting in a king size bed. That didn’t leave much room for side tables but we feel side tables are always essential in a master bedroom. After shopping for a while for a certain size table we were only able to come up with a few “condo” furniture options we weren’t particularly fond of. Our clients told us they had a friend that fabricated furniture and would look into asking him to make the tables for us. They followed through and did he ever deliver! Perfect fit and style we were aiming for.
Once we had that aspect settled we edited some of their family vacation photos and printed them in black and white for a feature art wall. Finally, the dresser we picked out arrived and we added a few accents, bedding, lighting, curtains and final touches. Voila, a new crisp and cozy bedroom by Leclair Decor.
