That being said, this house is actually only twenty minutes from downtown Ottawa, and serves as the full-time home for a family of four (five if you count their burly Bernese Mountain Dog), so campy cottage decor was out. We set out to create a space that felt woodsy and rustic, but still modern and stylish.
We considered our options for repainting the space but ultimately decided that the deep blue-grey tone of the existing accent wall added dimension and drama to the space in a way that would work with the overall design vision. Similarly, we thought about trying to sell the clients on painting out the raw wood window and doorway trim, but decided to leave it be and balance it out with a cognac leather chair from Pottery Barn. As it turns out, these pops of warm, earthy colour are some of our favourite details in the room.
We kept the room current and fresh by layering in some geometric pattern via the ottomans (CB2), cushions (Tonic Living), curtain panels (West Elm), and some structural table top decor. Hits of indigo were added to the mix which deliver some visual interest and contrast. The woodsy surroundings were referenced with a striking oversized print that really pops against the dark accent wall, and some fresh blossoming branches and faux pussy willow stems – which add all the texture and three-dimensional goodness of flowers without being too feminine or precious.
Last but not least, we swapped out some less-than-glorious 90s seashell sconces for two industrial inspired fixtures custom made for us by Lumiere Authentik in Bromont, Quebec. We love these lights because they’re both a perfect fit in the space, and a quiet ode to the home’s location in la belle province.
Our days spent working on this home in the park felt like mini escapes from the hectic day-to-day pace of city life, and we wanted this room to reflect that. There’s nothing too fancy or flashy in the space, but it still feels polished and pulled together. It’s the perfect example of how – like life in the woods sometimes less is just enough.
