Does this rug make my room look big?

One of the questions we get most frequently is how to size a rug for a room. Like most design questions, there’s no one perfect answer, but our general advice is this: the front legs of all main furniture pieces should be on the rug. Here’s our design team’s take on how to pick the perfect sized rug for your rooms.

Living room

For a large scale living room, where the furniture is floating, there is no excuse for a small rug! Place the front legs of all furniture on the outer edges of the rug or, for a cozier feel, you can actually place all of the furniture inside the outer edges.

Room size: 20′ x 19′

Rug size: 9′ x 12′

In a medium size living room, we normally opt for an 8′ x 10′ rug. The same rules as a larger living room apply. No ‘coffee table’ rugs please folks!

Rug size: 8′ x 10′

In a smaller living space, like a den or  a condo size living room, we tend to go for a 5′ x 8′ rug. Ideally, the front legs of all furniture touch the rug. Noticing a pattern?

Dining room

In a dining room, we want to have at least 24″ of rug beyond the edges of the table. This ensures that the chairs won’t be ‘half on, half off’ when pulled out. Generally a 9′ x 12′ or an 8′ x 10′ rug works well, depending on the size of your table.

Bedroom

Queen size or double bed:

For a medium or standard master bedroom, an 8′ x 10′ rug will normally be just right. If your bedroom is on the smaller side, we recommend going for a 5′ x 8′ rug installed horizontally under the bottom half of the bed.

Room size: 12′ x 15′                                                       Room size: 12′ x 12′

Rug size: 8′ x 10′                                                             Rug size: 5′ x 8′

King size bed:

For a king size bed, both 9′ x 12′ and 8′ x 10′  rugs will work.  A larger rug can make the space feel bigger and more open.

Room size: 16′ x 13′                                                       Room size: 16′ x 13′

Rug size: 9′ x 12′                                                             Rug size: 8′ x 10′

  1. Gorgeous! I’m new to following you on instagram and love your work. I’d love to see a post about the process of doing an out of town reno. How does it work logistically? How do you select materials? Who does the work? Etc. We are currently in a new home but will more than likely be purchasing an older home in the next two years that will require top to bottom renos/updates. We live in Sault Ste. Marie so there are not many designer options for us!

    1. Hi Heather! This is such a great idea for a post! We will definitely tackle this subject soon. Thanks!
