Our Favourite Paint Colours

Paint Colours_2

Picking a paint colour can be challenging to say the least. There are so many variables that can impact how a colour will look in a space, not limited to artificial and natural light, time of day, furniture, flooring, etc. While we definitely try new colours all the time, it’s nice to have a few favourites we can rely on to work in almost any space.

See our guide below and let us know what some of your favourites are in the comment section.

Does this rug make my room look big?

One of the questions we get most frequently is how to size a rug for a room. Like most design questions, there’s no one perfect answer, but our general advice is this: the front legs of all main furniture pieces should be on the rug. Here’s our design team’s take on how to pick the perfect sized rug for your rooms.

Living room

For a large scale living room, where the furniture is floating, there is no excuse for a small rug! Place the front legs of all furniture on the outer edges of the rug or, for a cozier feel, you can actually place all of the furniture inside the outer edges.

Room size: 20′ x 19′

Rug size: 9′ x 12′

In a medium size living room, we normally opt for an 8′ x 10′ rug. The same rules as a larger living room apply. No ‘coffee table’ rugs please folks!

Rug size: 8′ x 10′

Westmount Project Progress

IMG_7391.jpg

2018 is already shaping up to be our busiest year yet, and we are so excited about the the opportunities and milestones it holds. One of the special highlights this year is our Westmount project, a renovation and from-scratch decor job in a century home nestled in the one of Montreal’s most scenic neighbourhoods.

_MG_6000.jpg

The clients are a creative couple with precious twin daughters. They chose the house for it’s unique character and chic charm, very well suited to the family. So while the house is grand and fairly traditional (in the best way), they really want to bring it into this century and create a space that feels current and cozy. Our aim is to brighten and modernize the entire home while staying true to its historic appeal.

Note: Grace is the lead designer on this project so you’ll see her “pensive work face” throughout the photo’s! 🙂

5 Best Living Room Layers

Living rooms can be formal for after dinner drinks or casual spaces to hang out in all day Saturday. Depending on the function and style of your space there may be pieces that are more important than others, but generally speaking these are the 5 best pieces in addition to the obvious couch, coffee table, side table(s)…

1. Area Rug

An area rug really helps to anchor the space, frame it out and add a warmth for under your toes. It can also add a pop of colour or texture. A neutral shag or a patterned wool rug are classic looks and can really help lighten a dark space, soften a space with a lot of wood, and be an essential addition to a beautiful cozy living room.

2. Lighting

Lighting plays a huge role in every space and can be very underestimated. If you are sitting around having a quiet drink or reading a book you don’t need to light up the whole room. Task lighting including reading lamps, floor lamps and table lamps can really help add functional and ambiance lighting depending on the situation.

3. Art

The couch is a big part of any living space and the art that is hung above it should generally take up 2/3 – 3/4 of the size of the couch. This helps to balance it out. A small piece will make the space feel uncomfortable and incomplete. You can use one large canvas, or framed print or you can use two or three smaller ones that would take up the same amount of space on the wall.

4. Accent Pillows and Throws

These small but significant pieces can add a few different things to your living room. A pop of colour, pattern and or texture. They can help lighting a dark couch or contrast with a light couch. You can have fun with them play around with different ones depending on your mood or the season.

5. Accessories

Accessories are essential to any living space. They add unique touches and can really personalize and complete the room. Books, bowls, vases, knick knacks you’ve collected over the years (or just recently) really impact the feel of the room. Don’t overwhelm the space with them, but add enough to make it interesting.

Curtains are also a nice touch if the room allows for it. They can soften the space and add height to the room.
