We are so excited to finally invite you in and take you behind the scenes of one of our most loved projects on Instagram in 2019. This project has our signature warm modern style written all over it but our clients wanted to up the game even further - it was up to our designer Meredith to present some spectacular ideas that married our signature look with their laid back West Coast style. We’ve got all the behind-the-scenes scoop from Meredith, including the details on THAT custom moulding accent wall in the master bedroom.

Scroll the Q & A and let us know in the Comment Section if you have any further questions. We’ll answer them ASAP! Oh - and stay tuned for our reveal of their beautiful kitchen, living and dining room!

Q & A

Q: Was this project a very collaborative process with the clients?

A: Our clients for this project are a super cool, design-savvy, young couple (who welcomed the sweetest babe just as the project was wrapping up). They decided to work with their builder because they were able to customize a bit more than usual. They stayed just as involved when we stepped in to help with last-minute finish selections and furnishing the space. I would say this project was a bit more collaborative than most, but we were lucky these clients had an incredible eye and great taste.

Q: How would you describe the overall aesthetic of the project?

A: These clients have spent a lot of time on the West coast of both Canada and the US and they wanted to incorporate that cool, California vibe into their custom home. I'd say it's Modern California with some eclectic touches thrown in to keep things warm and relaxed.

Q: What's the number one tip that you’d give someone who is trying to recreate this Cali-cool vibe in their own home?

A: White walls, minimal splashes of deep, organic colours, oversized art, and comfy sofas and armchairs that you can sink into. Polished but not fussy, you want people to feel relaxed and immediately at home when they walk through your door.

Q: Can you talk a bit about the custom accent wall?

A: The master bedroom in this bungalow + loft home is right off the dining room and kitchen and is visible from the living room. For this reason, we wanted to add an extra layer of intrigue to the back wall; nothing too overpowering but eye-catching and textural. I love the look of ornate French-style moulding and wainscotting in a bedroom but that isn’t quite in keeping with the Modern Californian aesthetic that is consistent throughout the rest of the home. With that in mind, I decided to go with this subtle vertical strapping in a random pattern. I was nervous about presenting this idea to the clients, but I am so happy they trusted my vision and went with it because it turned out better than we could have imagined.

Q: How did you come to the decision to go with a four poster bed?

A: While the rest of the house is pretty California-inspired, we wanted to go a bit more romantic in the bedroom, and a canopy bed is just that — romantic, luxe, sophisticated. We had a high recessed ceiling to work with, so it was the perfect opportunity to bring some height into the room. As previously mentioned, because this room can be viewed easily from so many places in the house, it was essential for it to WOW and this black framed bed does just that. We made sure to choose one that still felt modern, cool, and minimal.
