Take stock of your current collection and shop early for new pieces
With fall decor blending straight into the holiday season, it’s often tricky to think ahead about shopping for holiday decor. We recommend re-evaluating your current pieces a few weeks before styling to get an idea of what might be in need of a refresh or what you might be missing to complete this year’s vision. This will ensure you’re ready to shop as soon as decor hits the shelves—which is especially important this year due to current supply chain struggles.

Start fresh & define your colour palette
When you’re ready to begin styling, start with a clean slate. Clear away other decor pieces and accessories to make space for new ideas and holiday items. To define your colour palette, start with a base of simple, neutral tones and then incorporate other colours and patterns that can be changed up every year. A few colour ways to inspire your styling include: classic black and white, wintery whites, neutrals with natural elements (greenery, wood tones, browns, etc.), silver and gold, or mixing reds and deep plums for a more traditional feel. The options are truly endless!

Bring the outdoors in
When transitioning our own home for the holidays, we love to embrace elements that represent the change in season. Creating special botanical moments throughout your home makes for an effortless holiday atmosphere. Use lush cedar branches, twigs, fresh-cut logs, and pine to bring the natural winter landscape in. For example, a simple garland adds fresh colour and can be used in a multitude of ways—styled along a mantle, hung around a door, draped on a banister, or simply placed in an unexpected location for that hint of holiday magic.

Add minimal yet thoughtful pieces in every room
We try to showcase pieces in our holiday decor in a way that gives them their own moment. We place subtle holiday accents throughout a space rather than an abundance or ‘display’ in one area. In each room, think of an easy decor swap you can make that will refresh the look without a dramatic change. We love seasonally-inspired greenery, a bowl of pinecones or neutral ornaments, and a holiday candle to spice up a coffee table for a classic look that will last through January.

Evoke all the senses
The holiday season is the perfect time to ‘hygge’ up your home with decor that appeals to all your senses. There are so many ways to evoke warm winter feelings without too many holiday-specific pieces that have an expiration date. In your textiles, swap in heavier knits, patterns, and plaids to add texture and a layer of coziness. Seasonal coffee table books, holiday scents, and a winter playlist at the ready are thoughtful final touches that will make your space even more inviting for gathering guests or your own cozy crew over the next few months.
